Cengiz Usta and His Son

I met Cengiz Sarıkuş in his workshop in Fındıkzade, where I went to have my oud done six years ago. He was born in Malatya, in 1949, graduated from Istanbul University Art History Department and had been an art history teacher for 26 years.

They produce many instruments such as oud, drum, bağlama, violin, and cümbüş in the music house named after his son Veysel. Cengiz learned this art from masters such as Agop Ohanyan, the last representative of the Armenian oud making school. He opened his first workshop in Aksaray in 1973. He has trained many masters working all over the world so far, and his last apprentice is his son Veysel.
